Bishop’s Notes – June 28, 2010

Dear Colleagues,

Here we are at the end of June and as I remember the rhythms of pastoral life, this is generally a time when a pastor feels quite fatigued.  Sometimes it’s hard to think clearly and some personalities can become quite introspective, and depending on how things are going, sink into a fog of discouragement where things seem hopeless and all of one’s efforts are useless.  This morning in my devotional reading I read the first five chapters of Ecclesiastes and one can’t help but feel Solomon’s struggle with meaning in all that he had been trying to do.  There are several places where he resolves his turmoil by saying in several different ways that “living in the moment” is the way to mature contentment.

For example, he says “A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without Him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” (Ecc. 2:24)  And then he writes, “I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.  That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil – this is the gift of God.” (Ecc. 3:12 &13)

But the verse that I think is the best for weary pastors to fixate on as they go on vacation is “He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.” (Ecc. 5:20)  So there’s a proof text for you as you take a break this summer – forget about the pressures of your ministry and rest and be careful to plan to do things that refresh you.

Yesterday morning Donna and I worshipped at Trulls Road FMC in Courtice, ON.  I was glad for the opportunity to open the scriptures to talk about what is most important to the Lord Jesus.  It also gave me a chance to remind them as God’s people that being in an extended transition is a time the Lord often uses to mature and reorient a congregation.  During this transition, Pastor Joan Stonehouse is doing an excellent job working alongside the Official Board and other lay leaders.

In the afternoon, we were in Burlington for the celebration of Mark Earle’s ordination.   Mark and Jennifer pastor the Cross Walk congregation (formerly Burlington FMC) that now meets in the Rotary Community Centre in Burlington’s Central Park – a great place to engage with people in the community.  They have opened a new chapter by relocating here and a congregation of the Congregational Christian Churches in Canada has joined with them. One could sense fresh optimism and energy for reaching people in the community.  Already they have had a couple of outreach events to which several have responded. It was a blessing to participate in Mark’s ordination and feel the joy and pride of his congregation and family.

There are pictures from these events in the Photo Gallery this week.

There is one announcement this week.  Aaron James has been appointed as the Lead Pastor at Blue Mountain Community Church in Thornbury, ON.

Have a great week serving Jesus.

Blessings,

Bishop Keith
