Bishop’s Notes – September 22, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

Last weekend, Donna and I were in Virginia for our niece and goddaughter’s wedding.  It was a really special time for us and we came away even more deeply convinced of the importance of making an effort to keep connected with our extended family.

Because Washington, DC was nearby, we went a day early to take a tour of Washington.  One of the stop-off points was the Korean War Memorial where one walks alongside life-sized soldiers walking in formation through shrubs.  As you look at their faces, it was clear that they were focused on a mission.  At the apex of the memorial, there was a wall with the words, “Freedom is not free.”

Afterwards, Donna and I were reflecting on this experience, which for both of us could only be described as eerie.  Every day, the memorial reminded us soldiers went out in the cause of freedom, and some sacrificed their lives.  There are some pics of this in the Photo Gallery.

We then got talking about the freedom that we have in the Lord Jesus and reminded ourselves that it too is not free.  He gave Himself in a great sacrifice for us.  Bringing spiritual freedom to our neighbourhoods is also not without sacrifice.  We follow a Lord on a mission into the world who said, “Take up your cross again today…  Follow me into the world….  It’s worth it because of the joy that is coming!”  So as you go into your neighbourhood this week, being salt and light to those you meet, remember that you are on a mission, and while you don’t bear arms, you do carry a cross and it’s important to represent Jesus well.  It’s worth it because of the joy that is coming!

We offer our congratulations to two people recently approved by the BOA:  Rick Venne, as a Commissioned Minister (New Horizons FMC, Sarnia, ON who is pastoring the Spanish congregation–Iglesia de Buen Samaritano); and we welcome Rev. Jae-Sun Song, who has transferred from the Korean Methodist Church (Pan-American Conference) into The Free Methodist Church in Canada.  He attends Wesley Chapel in Toronto and is helping a Korean church plant that meets there.

Have a great week serving Jesus.

Bishop Keith
