Dear Colleagues,Why do some congregations over 100 years old not only make it to the century mark but, in the case of the O’Connor FMC near Kakabeka Falls outside of Thunder Bay ON, they are still thriving? This was the question that I asked on Sunday morning as I preached in the service where we together dedicated their newly renovated facilities (new sanctuary with C.E. and youth facilities below) to the glory of God and to the ongoing ministry in this very rural community.
On Saturday afternoon, they gathered for games and a BBQ and then went inside for a fun evening of music and poetry – made up mostly of their own singers, musicians and writers. As I walked around, I met people whose love for the Lord Jesus and others inside and outside the church was very evident. They understand commitment, sacrifice, optimism, loyalty, working for unity, and love and laughter. I also met several community people. One family, who had received a lot of help from the congregation during a time of deep tragedy, called Pastor Chris Fiorito last week and volunteered to do all the barbecuing!! I hope that they eventually become part of the congregation.
Sunday morning, we gathered again for worship in the new sanctuary that doubled the size of their previous sanctuary (now a fellowship hall and new pastor’s office). One could just feel their pride in what they have accomplished together and their dream to see this building used to see God’s love brought to their township. It was good to have retired pastor Fred Hubert, who had cast the vision for this project, present for the celebrations. Of course, we had to feast again!!
After the meal, friends from the Thunder Bay FMC drove me to Thunder Bay where I had the opportunity to share fellowship and conversation around a table with folks from their congregation. I talked with them about what is happening in the FMCiC and also about their dreams for reaching their community before I left for my flight home. It was a good weekend in that part of Ontario’s beautiful northland.
There is one announcement this week. Edrice Clermy has been appointed to Église Méthodiste Libre des Mille-Iles in Montreal.
Have a great week serving Jesus.
P.S. Remember. If you are wondering about something related to the FMCIC and its ministry, please send your question to the Ministry Centre.
