Dear Colleagues,This morning I am in Hong Kong, but first let me tell you about last week’s Western Ministers Conference. It was evident to me that the Holy Spirit was active among us because of the powerful sense of unity and authentic fellowship and openness that we experienced together as pastors from the four western provinces and northern Ontario met at the Faithful Companions of Jesus Retreat Centre in the heart of Calgary. We had some very provocative presentations and experiences (can’t say more until the Eastern Conference has met) and I was first hand to some very engaging discussions within the sessions, at meal times and during break times on important issues related to the theme of the conference – “Living Generously”.
Yesterday, we worshipped at the Yan On FM Church in Hong Kong and joined in the celebration of its 20th anniversary. It is pastored by Rev. Simon Wan and we also had the opportunity to meet Superintendent Raymond Wong. Rev. Polly Ho, FM Mission Director for the Hong Kong Conference was our hostess, interpreter and guide. The church meets in a multi purpose area on the ground floor of a high-rise building. Polly explained to us that the FM churches in Hong Kong all try to have some social ministry operating out of the facilities that they own. During the week, the Yan On congregation operates a nursery school for the community. It was a real blessing to be with these Chinese brothers and sisters.
After the service, we travelled by bus to the University where we spent several hours enjoying lunch and a program that had been prepared. On the program was a Chinese writing activity where various groups within the church wrote messages on banners.
There are pics of these events in the Photo Gallery this week.
Tomorrow we leave for the Philippines where I will participate in meetings of the World Conference Executive Committee followed by a gathering of the Council of Bishops. I’ll tell you all about these experiences next week.
There are two announcements this week. Joan Stonehouse has been appointed as Interim Co-Pastor at Whitby FMC and Jessie Oldford has transitioned into retirement.
Have a great week serving Jesus.
