Bishop’s Notes – October 26, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

Last week was the Eastern Minister’s Conference at Wesley Acres.  It was a real joy to see pastors enjoying fellowship in Network meetings, during meal times  and in the interactive portions of the teaching sessions.   On Tuesday night when I asked those who were new to the Conference to stand to be welcomed, I think everyone was surprised by the number of pastors that have come into our movement since 2007.  Some of these are Ministerial Candidates and several are people that we have welcomed as transfers from other denominations.  It was a pleasure to have (former bishop) Dr. Gary Walsh with us representing Northeastern Seminary and to have him pray for these new leaders.

On Wednesday night after Joanne Bell’s presentation on “Disciplines of Deprivation – the Antidote for Consumerism,” there was a powerful time of seeking God in prayer.  Several have mentioned to me how deeply they were touched during that prayer session.  There are lots of pics from the Conference in the photo gallery this week.  Among them you will see a picture of Ryan Young (New Horizons, Sarnia, Ontario) being presented with his Ministerial Candidate certificate.

After the conference, we travelled to the Ottawa region where I spent time working with church leaders.  On Saturday night, Donna and I dropped into Cornerstone Community Church in Almonte to take in part of a Southern Gospel concert performed by none other than “Elvis.”  This was one of several events that were part of their 10th anniversary celebrations.  During the day they had had community-oriented activities for families with children and Pastor Glen Snider told me that the turnout from the community was very encouraging.  The couple sitting behind us at the Saturday night concert told us that they didn’t attend church anywhere and it was the first time for them to be at Cornerstone.

On Sunday morning I preached at Arlington Woods FMC in Ottawa.  It was good to spend time with this congregation and to enjoy lunch after the service where I had opportunity to have fellowship and interact with some of their leaders.  In the morning service we heard an encouraging report on one of their “Church in Motion” initiatives that is a church and community based food drive to “help make hunger disappear” in the greater Ottawa area.

As we were leaving, people were gathering for the afternoon worship service of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church led by Pastor Dereje which I understand is developing a very strong ministry among Ethiopian people in the Ottawa region.

There are no new appointments this week.

Finally, I would like to ask all of you that read the Congregational Health Survey email on Friday (written by Dan Sheffield and sent by Marcia Goldstein on behalf of the Systems Analysis Task Team) to make sure that you and your staff, delegate(s), and Board Chairs click on to the congregational health survey and get the responses in from your church this week.  Here’s how Dan closed off that email: “So if you can click on the link and take, literally, just a couple minutes, right now, you would make some people real happy!”

So, to help you bring some happiness to Dan and his friends on the Task Team, please click on the following link and you can do this no research needed “leader perception survey” in just the next few minutes.

Have a great week serving Jesus.
