Dear Colleagues,This last weekend was a wonderful time of celebration as two different congregations in two provinces paused to celebrate what the Lord has been doing. On Saturday, Donna and I were in Montreal, where we spent the morning talking with several different pastors about the opportunities and challenges they are seeing in their ministries in the greater Montreal area. In the afternoon, we were at the St Henri church in the heart of the city to participate in the celebration of ten years at their current location and the dedication of their renovated facilities. There was a wonderful sense of joy among us as we engaged in worship led by a lively worship band and heard the testimonies of people who have participated in St Henri’s journey over the last decade. This is a story of partnership among churches as was evident when Howard Olver brought greetings on behalf of several Ontario churches that sent work teams to help with the renovation project.
This church, pastored by Philippe Reichenbach, is patiently making inroads into the St Henri community. Once a month, they open their doors on Saturday night for a coffee house outreach. They also use their facilities (basement, main floor, & second floor) for a whole variety of ministries. Philippe and Nicole and their family live in an apartment on the third floor.
On Sunday morning, we joined in with the celebrations at Belleville Centennial FM Church. They were pausing to mark 50 years of ministry at their present site. Again, there was a spirit of joy and gratitude in the morning worship service as we reflected on the faithfulness of God working through the lives of people who are listening for His voice and seeking to do His will. This congregation, pastored by Rodney and Heather Peterson, has been through a challenging season, but it was evident that there is a new spirit of unity and optimism among them. It was good to be able to spend time talking with people during the coffee and cake fellowship after the service.
There are photos from these two events in the Photo Gallery this week.
We want to offer our congratulations to Dr. Cathy Stonehouse, who is the 2010 recipient of the Warren Benson Lifetime Achievement Award in Christian Education. This honour was bestowed upon Dr. Stonehouse last week by the Association of Professors of Christian Education. Dr. Stonehouse has distinguished herself as a scholar and teacher in the area of Christian Education and has had influence upon the formation of many students as the Orlean Bullard Beeson Professor of Christian Education and as the Dean of the School of Practical Theology at Asbury Theological Seminary
We also offer our congratulations to Ron Bartolo, who has been approved for ordination by the Board of Administration of The Free Methodist Church in Canada. Information about his ordination is listed below with others.
There are several appointments to announce this week (see below). Liisa Farrugia has been appointed to Freedom Christian Community, Brantford, ON, Peter Banks has been appointed to Houghton Academy, and two new Network Leaders have been appointed – Vern Munshaw (replacing David Moore) and Grant Wolfe (replacing Jennifer Anderson).
I will have limited access to email and phone this week. The reason for this is that the Board of Administration has asked me to take several weeks during 2010 for reading and reflection. This week is going to be one of those weeks, and I am looking forward to things that will be clarified as I spend time in solitude, reading and reflecting on God’s agenda for our movement during this season of its history.
Have a great week serving the Lord Jesus.
