Dear Colleagues,Last week was a very interesting week for me with a whole variety of experiences that have challenged and stretched me. I took the opportunity to read a book by Phyllis Tickle entitled the The Great Emergence – How Christianity is Changing and Why. It’s a short and readable book but one that is packed with insight and scholarly analysis.
I’ve been wanting to read some of Tickle’s writings because she is going to be the featured speaker at the Epiphaneia Conference during the day before the beginning of General Conference. Her thesis is that we are in the middle of “a monumental phenomenon in our world” and in her book she studies similar major upheavals in history – the Great Reformation in 1517, the Great Schism in 1054, and the reforms put in place by Gregory the Great in 590, positing that about every 500 years a major cultural shift happens. She calls the present cultural shift the Great Emergence and traces developments (in culture and in the church) that have been in play since the Great Reformation that have led us to where we presently find ourselves.
I probably need to read the book again to really grasp the import of what she is saying especially since what she has written begins to make some sense of the chaos of this time of discontinuous change. What I especially appreciate is the respectful way that she writes about every tribe of the Christian family.
On a totally different level, I have been thinking about what maturity in the life of a Christian disciple looks like. I was reading devotionally in Romans and came upon a definition that Paul includes as he winds down his letter to the Christians at Rome. He’s blessing them with benedictions that centred them on endurance, encouragement, unity, hope, joy and peace and then writes this as his statement of his confidence in them: “I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another” (Romans 15:14). It seemed to me that this three-part description of Christian maturity is worthy of further reflection – goodness, knowledge, and competence.
In front of all of you, I want to say thank you to the Board of Administration for urging me to take this time for reading and reflection.
The Systems Analysis Task Team and the Board of Administration meet this week. Please remember us in your prayers.
There are no new announcements this week, but let me remind you of Felix Chow’s ordination next Sunday (see details below).
Have a great week serving Jesus.
P.S. Remember. If you are wondering about something related to the FMCIC and its ministry, please send your question to the Ministry Centre.
