Bishop’s Notes – May 3, 2010

Dear Colleagues,

Last week was a great week!  On Monday I attended the Wesley Ministry Conference at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto along with just over 200 pastors and  Christian leaders  from the five denominations that together sponsor the Chair of Wesley Studies at Tyndale – the Brethren in Christ, the Free Methodists, the Nazarenes, the Salvation Army, and the Wesleyans.  In addition to the meaty and thought-provoking presentations by Dr. Timothy Tennent and Dr. Howard Snyder on the issues of ministry in a pluralistic context, it was good to see pastors from the participating denominations in conversation with each other and enjoying fellowship during the lunch and break times.  We hope that arrangements can be made for all to have access to these presentations.

On Saturday, delegations from the churches in Manitoba and Saskatchewan met for the Arlington Beach Regional Gathering.  It was a nasty, wet and cold day (one delegation was not able to get there because of driving conditions), but the fellowship in the gathering was very warm and the conversations energized.  As I moved from group to group, I was moved as I listened in as group members earnestly prayed for God’s blessings on the ministries of other churches in their group.

Yesterday morning, I preached at First FMC in Moose Jaw and at the conclusion of the service Chad Vankoughnett was ordained to the ministry of the Word, Sacrament and Leadership.  Every time that I lead ordinands in taking their vows, I am struck with the awesome opportunity that is given to ministers of the gospel to give leadership in Christ’s church to “proclaim His Word, declare His forgiveness, celebrate the sacraments, care for and lead God’s people.”

Some months back when Chad submitted his reflection paper on ordination to MEGaP, he asked a very good question.  He pointed out that ordinands make important and serious promises to the Church when they take their vows and he wondered why there was no reciprocal vow made by the Church to an ordinand.  SCOD took this good question and developed a response to the ordinand that was used for the first time yesterday.  On your behalf, I said to Chad:

“Let the Church, represented by those present here as ordained ministers and the congregation, support you as you participate in the opportunities it provides for you to continue to grow and develop as a minister of the gospel.”

I’m glad for this addition to the ordination ritual and it is my prayer that as God’s people, we will do our very best to fulfill this promise to help our pastors to continue to grow as healthy, godly, competent leaders.

There are pics from each of these events in the Photo Gallery this week.  The Prayer Guide for May 6-7 is also attached.

Last evening, it was good to have an opportunity to spend some time encouraging and doing some leadership teaching with the members of the Board and ministry leaders at Lakeview FMC in Saskatoon.  Good things are happening there.

There is one announcement this week.  Tom Gurnick has been appointed to Queensway FMC – see below for details.  Please remember to pray for the N.W. Ontario Regional Gathering that meets in Dryden, ON next weekend.

Have a great week serving Jesus.
