Bishop’s Notes – March 16, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

On Saturday, we began in Montreal with the first 2009 Regional Gathering. All together there are 16 congregations in the Quebec region and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet church planters and some of their leaders of a number of new congregations.  As you will see in the pictures in the Photo Gallery, many of these congregations are immigrants from Haiti, and Central Africa.

The conversations and fellowship times were very animated.  Two key themes that emerged were the challenges of adapting ministry approaches so as to reach secularized Quebecers who live in their neighbourhoods.  The second challenge has to do with retaining the next generation of young adults who are fully acclimatized to Canadian culture.  I emphasized to the gathering that these are not unique to Quebec but to all our congregations who desire to be missional.

On Sunday morning, I preached at Eglise évangélique vision de la lumière, a Haitian congregation in the St. Michel area of Montreal pastored by Raynal Jean-Charles.  This growing inter-generational congregation with a large vision for reaching others shares a second-storey worship area with two congregations of other denominations.  As they continue to grow, they realize that they will need to move to another location.

On Sunday afternoon there was a great celebration at Rosemont EML as Pierre Andre Jean-Charles was set apart as a Commissioned Minister.  The joy was evident as you will see in the pictures in the photo gallery.

We offer our congratulations to Terri Payk who has been approved by the BOA as a Commissioned Minister, and to Christopher Payk and Matthew Wiley, who have been approved for ordination.  Their Commissioning and Ordination Service will take place at Rice Road Community Church in Welland, Ontario on April 19, 2009 at 4 pm.

We have been making progress on the Annual Reports.  72% have been received, but 41 pastors are still holding us in suspense.   Please try to get these in this week as we would like to have a report on 2008 for the Board of Administration when it meets next month.  Delegates, could you check with your pastor please, to see if he/she needs help to get the Annual Report to us?

Have a great week serving Jesus.

Blessings,

Bishop Keith
