Bishop’s Notes – June 29, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

I hope today finds you fully engaged with summer and the blessings of pleasant, warm days – either in special summer outreach mode or in time away for rest and renewal.  This, of course, is the season for camping ministries and I invite you to join with me in praying for God’s blessings upon the various Family Camps as they happen in different locations across Canada.  This week is Family Camp 1 at Wesley Acres and we trust that all will go well.

Last summer when I visited Sri Lanka for the first time, I had the privilege of beginning a friendship with Rev. Ebenezer Joseph, the President of the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka.  He is a very fine Christian leader.  Last week, he had the occasion to visit in Toronto and to my delight, he made time in his busy schedule to stop by for tea and conversation.  Please remember this dear friend in your prayers as he gives leadership to the Methodist Church there, particularly in its works with thousands of people who are in dire circumstances as a result of the war.

Yesterday morning, I had the privilege of worshiping at the Cedar Street Community Church in Simcoe, Ontario.  It was great to be with Pastor Ron Mullin and his wife Lynn and to see Ron leading the worship service after a long year of healing.  (You may remember that about a year ago, he was severely injured in a very serious motorcycle accident.)  I also appreciated the opportunity to meet the Cedar Street folk and to share some fellowship time with their official board.

Later in the afternoon, David and Kathy Stephenson were ordained to Christian ministry at the Ridgeway Community Church.  Cliff Fletcher (from Barrie FMC) who has been a long-time friend and mentor to the Stephensons brought a very timely message.  It was a wonderful celebration, and for those who remember David’s posting on the Listserv about becoming a grandfather, well, there’s a picture of the proud grandparents with this precious little one.

There are pictures for all these events in the Photo Gallery this week.

There are two announcements to make this week.  We offer our congratulations to Belinda Leibel (Northview in Regina, SK) who has been approved as a Ministerial Candidate by the Board of Administration.  Lynda Sinclair has been appointed as Assistant Pastor at Arlington Woods FMC in Nepean, ON (see details below).

Please also see the Prayer Guide for July 2-3 (attached).

Donna and I plan to be away on vacation until July 8.  We want to model the importance of both working with all of your might to see the kingdom of God advance but then also taking time for rest and renewal.
