Bishop’s Notes – June 15, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

I don’t know about you, but I had a great weekend.  Mine began with a beautiful drive through the Rockies from Mission, BC to Merritt on Friday afternoon where the pastors of the BC network were gathered for supper and an evening of fellowship.  As we ate supper, we kept our eyes on the TV screens in the restaurant as another season of NHL hockey came to a conclusion.  I can’t say that there was a lot of sensitive pastoral care given to Red Wing fans at the table by the Penguin supporters.  I guess MEGaP will have to address this.   After supper, it was on to the local park for a game of bocchi and lots of laughs and conversation.

The next day lay leaders arrived and we met in the local Evangelical Free church for the last of the 2009 Regional Gatherings.  Again, it was a great day with authentic sharing, warm fellowship, and some good times of prayer.  We were especially happy to welcome Rev. Shonu Ghosh and his wife Harriett who are pastoring our Mainstreet Community Church in Kelowna.  (More about them later.)  I also took the opportunity to present Dustin Laird (youth pastor at Lakeside Community Church in Salmon Arm) with his Ministerial Candidate certificate and to give the whole group the chance to celebrate this accomplishment with him and offer their congratulations.  Dustin is one more answer to our prayers as a movement for God to raise up godly, competent leaders.  In fact, it was encouraging to also meet several other young leaders who had come from various congregations.  The future is looking promising.

Though it takes a lot of time, energy and resources to host nine Regional Gatherings, I am convinced that the Lord has led us to make this a part of helping us as a movement to have healthy connections among congregations across this great country.  We’ll do the Regional Gatherings again in the first part of next year and I’m already looking forward to what the Lord will do.

On Sunday morning, Donna and I worshipped at Centennial Chapel in Kamloops.  It was great to be with Pastor Vern Frudd and Jackie and their congregation.  This is a warm, multi-generational congregation and the highlight of the day was the reception of new members.  BTW, this is Darryl Dozlaw’s (pastor at Northview FMC in Regina) home church.

On Sunday afternoon, we drove to Kelowna for a service of induction for Shonu Ghosh at Mainstreet Community Church and what a turnout of people!  It was great to see FM people from several other BC congregations present for the celebration as well as representatives from eight other denominations.  We praise the Lord for this day of encouragement for the Mainstreet congregation as they open a new chapter of ministry.

There are pictures from these 3 events in the Photo Gallery.

There is one announcement to make this week.  Avonlea FMC, Avonlea, SK has gone into transition.  I’m on vacation for a couple more days.

Have a great week serving Jesus.
