Bishop’s Notes – January 31, 2017

Dear Colleagues,

Once again this past week, I felt immense appreciation for all of you who support World Relief Canada. Because of our unique partnership agreement with them, 30% of all that they receive from FMCiC churches is forwarded to the FMCiC Bishop’s Relief Fund.  This enabled us to send $20,000 to the FMC in the Philippines to help with relief efforts there because of the massive flooding that happened earlier this month.

Here are some excerpts from messages sent to the Council of Bishops by Bishop Alan Bacus of the Philippines:

January 18: Please pray for Philippines. In all places where there are so many Free Methodist Churches that are under unusual flooding. There so many church buildings under water and both pastors and members are affected.

January 19: Thank you very much for all your prayers and encouragements. Many families were affected. Many lost their homes. We lost some Church buildings. We are still waiting for the government assessments and reports if there are casualties. We are now working for relief operation. At the same time today is the second day for our synchronize GC 40 Days Prayer and Fasting.  Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ. We will arise.

January 24: Please continue to pray for those flood victims. We are still in the process of gathering reports about the affected families. We have Lay Pastors serving in the tribal churches that lost their livelihood -farmlands. Some lost their buffalo, pigs and chickens. I received a report this morning that the husband of our Lady Lay Pastor in Comota Village died. He was drowned when he tried to rescue his water buffalo during the flood. As the reports are coming from the interior areas the number of household affected is now reaching almost 1,600. There are still places that we are waiting on for the report. While houses of our members totally and partially destroyed is more or less 50 (I am still asking for exact figures). I know something good is going to happen through this crisis. I am excited of what God will do after this trial.  Attached are images of the people start rebuilding salvaging what was left. But every day the threat of the flood is still there because right now the rain is still pouring every now and then and water level is unstable. Thank you for all your encouragement and prayers.

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to check off two things on my “bucket list”.

Item #1: On Sunday morning, Donna and I worshipped at The Journey, a church that is being planted by David and Kathy Stephenson in Ridgeway, Ontario.  They are very encouraged by the steady growth that is happening as they reach out to their community.  Holding a “Lifetree Café” (described as “an hour-long experience packed with interesting stories, fascinating people, and lively conversation that will feed your soul.  The main entrée at Lifetree Café is food for thought”) on a weeknight is an initiative that seems to be working well.

Item #2: On Sunday afternoon, we were in Kitchener at the Kingsdale Community Centre for Evan Garst’s ordination.  It was great to experience the enthusiasm of the Una congregation pastored by Evan and Jennifer and to have an opportunity to see the venue where they meet week by week.

There are pictures of the flooding in the Philippines and of my visits to The Journey and Evan’s ordination in the Photo Gallery this week.

There are no new announcements this week.

Please remember two important tasks on your “to do” list:
