Bishop’s Notes – August 30, 2010

Hello everyone,

I have been thinking about the Chilean miners who have been trapped 700 metres under the earth’s surface since August 5.  I cannot begin to imagine the devastation that their families  and friends felt when they heard about the  collapse in the mineshaft a couple hundred metres above where the men were working.  And then, I can only imagine the sense of exhilaration and joy that swept through the community when news reached them that they were still alive and huddled safely in a “refuge room.”  The challenges relating to the physical drilling that will need to happen to rescue them are daunting, but psychologists who are working with the miners and their families to keep hope alive have an equally challenging task.

I’ve been thinking about hope.  If we lose hope, it becomes more and more difficult to keep going, no matter what our life situation.  As believers, our hope is rooted in the Lord Jesus; and yet even so, sometimes circumstances can overwhelm us and its light flickers lower.

Some time ago, a friend sent me a prayer written by Walter Bruegemann, entitled “At the Dawn.”  I’ve used this prayer in my personal devotions off and on ever since.  I like it because of the way it is rooted in the reality of impulses that push us around in the spiritual life and yet, foundationally, it orients us to fresh daily hope that is rooted in our relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Here is Bruegemann’s prayer:

 At the Dawn

Our first glimpse of reality this day — everyday — is your fidelity.
We are dazzled by the ways you remain constant among us,
  in season, out of season,
  for better, for worse,
  in sickness and in health.
 You are there in watchfulness as we fall asleep;
You are there in alertness when we awaken . . . and we are glad.
Before the day ends, we will have occasion
to flag your absence in indifference . . .
but not now, not at the dawn.
Before the day ends, we will think more than once
that we need a better deal from you . . .
but not now, not at the dawn.
Before the day ends, we will look away from you and
relish our own fidelity and our virtue in mercy . . .
but not now, not at the dawn.
Now, at the dawn, our eyes are fixed on you in gladness.
We ask only that your faithfulness
permeate every troubled place we are able to name,
  that your mercy
move against the hurts to make new,
  that your steadfastness
hold firmly what is too fragile on its own.
And we begin the day in joy, in hope, and in deep gladness. Amen.

There are several appointments to announce.  See below.  The Network Leaders are meeting this week for training and dialogue; please pray for us.

Have a great week serving Jesus.

Blessings,

Bishop Keith
